MEDICARE FOR DISABILITIES AND SPECIAL NEEDS
When Medicare is discussed it’s undoubtedly being referenced in regards to retirees or the elderly. But did you know that Medicare benefits exist for individuals with disabilities and special needs?
WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR MEDICARE?
The easiest way to know if you’re eligible for Medicare benefits is if you are already receiving Social Security Disability. If you are then you’re already signed up to receive Medicare after 24 months of Social Security benefits.
Medicare usually starts on the 13th calendar month after your disability, but this waiting period is waived if you have special needs like dialysis, transplants, ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease.
WHAT DO YOU GET?
There are different parts to Medicare. Part “A” does not require a premium. Everyone pays for part “A” when they pay Medicare payroll or employment taxes while working. Part “A” covers hospital stays, hospices, etc.
Other parts “B” (for doctors, outpatient services) and “D” (prescription drugs) both require a monthly premium.
WHAT ABOUT MEDICAID?
Medicaid is different from Medicare and is a separate insurance program. A big difference is that receiving Social Security Disability does not automatically qualify you for Medicaid.
Medicaid offers health insurance coverage for individuals who have low income or assets while also meeting other special requirements. You may also be eligible for Medicaid through special programs run by local state and county service departments.
